Tesla Gigafactories are popping up all over the world, both real and imagined and it is hard to keep up. Here is a handy list of all the Giga factories known to humankind.
But first, what is a Gigafactory and why are they known by the name?
Gigafactory is simply a huge plant where Tesla makes nice things. Nice things like Tesla electric cars and battery packs.
According to Arstechnica, the first Gigafactory was so named because it was designed to produce batteries with gigawatts-hours of storage capacity. After that, the name kind of stuck.
So let’s go into the list of Gigafactories because we know you can’t wait.
Giga Nevada
This is the first ever Gigafactory seen by mankind and the one that yielded the Giga appellation. It is so huge that even Tesla, known for audacious projects has not been able to finish it. Inside, you will see humans making the Lithium-ion batteries and other electric vehicle components found in Tesla vehicles. The plant is located in Storey County, Nevada, US. It is operated jointly with Panasonic.
Giga New York
This is another huge building located along the Buffalo River, where solar cells and solar panels are conjured. In its former life, the 1.2 million square-foot facility was used to make steel but Tesla upgraded it to a Gigafactory.
Giga Shanghai
This Gigafactory is located in Shanghai, China and wholly owned by Tesla. The plant produces low entry Model 3 and Model Y and Lithium-ion battery packs. Even though already in use, the facility is still being expanded because for Tesla, nothing is big enough.
Giga Berlin
This is an upcoming Gigafactory. Despite opposition by environment focused citizens, it is gradually taking shape in Grunheide, near Berlin in Germany. It is another massive undertaking by Tesla. It is expected to produce Model Y (500,000 of them annually) and battery packs for the EV loving European branch of the human race.
Giga Texas
This is another ginormous Gigafactory still in furious development by Tesla. As the name indicates, it is located in Austin, Texas. It is set to be fully operational before the end of this calendar year. Out of its innards will come the hotly anticipated Cybertruck, Tesla Model Y and Tesla Semi trucks. It is going to cost a billion dollars.
Giga UK
The first entry in the rumored category so no photos to show. Even though Elon Musk has said Brexit has made it less likely to materialize, people are still hoping. Location is of course unknown.
Giga Somewhere-In-Asia
Lots of unknown. Might be a battery making Gigafactory in collaboration with Panasonic in South Korea.
Giga Central-US
Another Gigafactory yet to be sited. Many potential candidates lined up though.
Giga India
Now that Tesla has been reported to open offices in India, the agitation has started for an Indian Gigafactory. Of course there can never be enough Gigafactories.
