The entire world knows by now that the video-sharing platform TikTok is currently the hottest thing on the Internet. From dance hits such as ‘WAP’ by American artist Cardi B to trending videos such as Bella Poarch’s lip-sync cover of the popular song ‘M to the B’, TikTok has been the go-to app if you are trying to aim for Internet stardom.
And one of the most famous personalities to come out from the Chinese social networking service is American influencer Addison Rae. With millions of followers on her social media accounts, Addison Rae has soared to success in the past years. However, the 20-year-old TikTok star admits that constantly being in the Internet spotlight has its downsides. In a recent interview with Glamour Magazine, Addison Rae talks about the mental health struggles that came along with her meteoric rise to fame.
Mental health is not a joke, check on your friends and family.
Starting off her career in August of 2019, Addison Rae has quickly generated staggering numbers on TikTok which continues to grow up to today. With over 76 million followers and a whopping 4.9 billion likes as of writing, it does not come as a surprise to many people that Addison Rae is currently the top earner on the hit video-sharing platform. And unfortunately, being the center of attention on a regular basis is an easy target for Internet trolls.
Trolling and hate comments are things which Addison Rae is learning to accept as a harsh reality for most online celebrities. “When I look at negative comments, I can’t let it get to me that much…there’s going to be people that don’t like you and that want to tear you down, but you have to love yourself for who you are.”, the TikTok superstar said.
Sadly, a lot of the negative comments that Addison receives from online trolls revolves around body shaming, which Addison confesses to Glamour Magazine is one of the issues that provokes her the most. “It’s a really hard thing to deal with when you’re a girl, especially going through your teens. I am 20 and my body is constantly changing, but people have this high standard around body image and say, ‘Oh, you have to look like this to look great or to look hot or to be cool or to be pretty.”, the influencer revealed.
However, the TikTok dancer has since learned to come to terms with comments about her body from ‘online haters’, “I have thought a lot in the past year that it doesn’t really define me and I am learning to love my body and who I am, for what I am.”, Addison adds.
Recently, Addison has been regularly attending therapy sessions to cope with the effects of social media popularity with regards to her mental health, in addition to daily activities such as exercising and personal skin care. The TikTok influencer also relies on advice and support on how to handle the responsibilities of fame from fellow personalities such as Charli D’Amelio and Kourtney Kardashian to name a few.
Addison has definitely learned a thing or two from therapy, especially when it comes to her prestigious career. “Not letting your past define your future. Not falling into the same things that you have seen or known before that you know are not right, and not letting that dictate what you’re going to do in your life…and, directing your own path and making your life what you want it to be. You’re making your destiny.”, she opens up.
